Here is a glossary of online terms. Every industry has its own jargon, the world of e-business is no exception. Along with this rich list of jargon listed below is a set of essential questions and answers for the serious e-entrepreneur.
A
A New York minute
To do something quickly without any hesitation
Above the fold
This term is taken from the newspaper business. It is the part of the folded newspaper that you can read without having to open it. So too on a web page it is the content that you see without having to scroll down.
Acquisition
This term is taken from the bricks and mortar world of business. There it means the purchase of a business or product. Online it means a company has registered, spoken and or made a sale to a customer.
Acquisition cost
It is the cost of advertising divided by the number of click- throughs.
Ad banner
An ad banner is an advertisement that links from one site to another. It is usually a graphic ad.

B2B/Business-to-Business
Businesses who products and services cater to other businesses.
Back end
All the things that take place behind the scenes or ‘screens’ to make a site work such as, site management, monitoring the number of sales, pricing, product placement et cetera. Click here for more.
Backbone
The internet is the backbone or main artery to which all other networks link.
Backdoor
The backdoor is a generally unknown way by which a website or computer system may be accessed. For example each website has an IP Address and rather than entering the domain name the IP Address may be entered.
C
Cable modem
It is a communications device that changes digital to analog; and analog to digital. It receives data from the same cable that a television uses. A cable modem allows the transmission of more data at a higher speed than a telephone line.
Cam
It is taken from the word camera. A cam is usually an inexpensive video camera that is hooked up to the personal computer and can takes still photos and transmits live videos over the internet.
Careware
Any e- product, for which, the author asks for a donation to be made to a specific charity in lieu of the purchase price.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
A health problem of the hand and wrist area that is commonly associated with the prolonged use of a computer.
Cascading style sheets (CSS)
A simple HTML procedure used by developers to customize web pages with special fonts, colors, titles, headings, colors, paragraphs and so on.
D
Data
Data means information. Online data is everything such as the written word, numbers, audios, icons, graphics or anything that can be seen and processed on the computer.
Data backup
An emergency copy or copies of information on files such as disk, CDS, flash drives et cetera.
Data cleaning service
A data management procedure where by a person or company removes errors and other problems from a second party´s database.
Data recovery
To restore data that has been erased by mistake, infected by a computer virus, or which have had an electrical power-surge or power outage.
Data repositor
A file server or a special place where data is stored.
E
eBay
E-Bay was founded in September 1995 by Pierre Omidar. With 29 million registered users it is the largest online auction
e-Book
The letter ‘e’ before a word means electronic. An e-book is an electronic book that can be downloaded and read on a computer or cell phone, palm pilot or any other hand held device.
e-Business
Businesses that are doing some or all of their business on the internet. It can be a marketing term used to suggest that companies have an e-business component to their business strategies.
e-Commerce
Electronic commerce or business with a strong buying and selling component. It can also mean the ability for businesses to accept cash payments online.
e-Distribution
A marketing term. Online it means to deliver virtual goods such as books, music, software and so on to the buyer / end user.

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ)
Commonly asked questions about a product or service. These are compiled together with the answers for the immediate response to a question. FAQ´s have become a staple of every site.
Fetch
A program created by Jim Matthew for the Macintosh. It uses File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to transfer files from computer to server, and server to computer.
Fiber-optic cable
Fiber-optics cable transmits data at a very high speed.
File
Any data stored on a computer is stored in files. Some are text and others are program files.
File compression
Data made smaller so that it can transmit quicker. Gif, Jpg, Mpeg, Tif and zip are examples of compressed files.
G
Gateway
Hardware and software create a gateway so information from incompatible protocols is shared.
Gigabits or billions of bits per second (Gbps)
A gigabits is the measure of a billions bits of data per second.
Generation-e
All generations whether baby boomers or generation Y who are familiar and comfortable with computer technologies.
GIF or .gif
Images most often seen on the internet. They are popular because they are compressed into small files that download quickly.
Glitch
An interruption in the smooth flow of electric power to a computer or a network of computers or a server.
Google is a search engine that began in 1998 by Drs. Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Google is now a giant corporation that has companies in the telecommunication industries. Because of its popularity ‘Google’ –the word has become a verb. It means have you ‘looked him up’ or ‘searched for information on him’.
Graphic or graphics
Pictures that are seen on a computer.
H
Hacker
An extremely clever computer programmer who knows a lot about programming. And who use his/her knowledge to develop robust programs to deflect and resist ‘crackers’ attempts at breaking into a company´s secured system. (Ethical hacking)
Handheld device
A portable telecommunication device that accesses the internet. Cell phones, BlackBerry, cell phones, laptops, pagers, smart phones et cetera are examples of hand held devices
Hard copy
Any printed copy of data or information
Hard drive
The part of the computer that stores all of the electronic data and software.
I
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers / ICANN
A registry for all domain names on the internet. It also oversees the space and boundaries given to IP addresses. ICANN´s purpose is to be a clear and distinct so that it can protect the rights of the many stakeholders who invest in the internet.
Icon
An image used to represent something else. For example the ‘e’ on the desktop is an icon which represents internet explorer.
Identity theft
A crime whereby criminals steal the personal information that identifies a person to be who they say they are. The criminal then assumes the identity of that person for criminal gain.
Impressions
An online advertising term. Example 590 impressions mean that an ad banner was downloaded 590 times

Joint Photographic Experts Group
This is similar to gif. It is popular on the internet and is best used in real color or gray tints of real world color
K
Keyword
This is an online marketing and research term. It is the word or phrase which you enter into the search box on Google or any other search engine when looking for information.
Knowledge worker
A person who works in the industry and research, collects, summarizes, and then puts that information into comprehensive packages.
L
Local Area Network / LAN
A network of computers within a certain area that share, send and receive files and information from each other.
Landing page
The page that you land on when you follow a link.
Latency
In a network of computers it refers to the time it takes for a request to be made and met.
Leverage
The process of taking a product and optimizing all marketing strategies to such a degree that the results are huge.
Link
A highlighted or under- lined text or a graphic image such as an ad banner or button that the user can click and which takes them to another place on the same or at a different website.
M
Manufacturer-to-Manufacturer /M2M
An online term derived from marketing. It means the business to business electronic transactions that take place between manufactures.
Magnetic
This also is referred to as ‘sticky’. A website that is so useful, informative and relevant that visitors stay longer than usual and keep coming back.
Mail filter
A filtering or weeding out program that removes or keeps e-mail. A great spam prevention tool.
Mailbot
This is also called an auto-responder. It is an automation that is set to send an email when a certain function is performed. Example: It may go out when a request for more information is made or it may be set to send out newsletters to certain emails every week and so on.
Mailbox
The place where you receive your e-mails.
N
Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology is a sophisticated technology that looks into the development and creation of technologies that is very, very small .Example: a camera the size of the tip or point of a pin or toothpick.
Navigation bar
The itemized contents of the website usually displayed on the left that takes you to those pages on the website.
Net radio
A radio-type audio format that is broadcasted over the internet and for which you need an application such as Real Player to hear.
O
Official site
An authorized and designated site of a famous person that is managed by a staff comprising of managers, publicists and others who are in the celebrity´s employ.
Offline
Not on online.
Offline browser
The capability of many browsers such as Internet Explorer or Netscape to allow you to download web content while on line and to be able to access that content when and if the computer is not online.

To be connected to the internet
Online ad
Any advertising displayed on web pages and that takes place on the internet.
Online auction
An online auction mimics a real time auction but the participants are making their bids online. The item goes to the highest bidder.
Online community
Groups of people who meet on websites, news groups, discussion groups, forums, chat rooms with similar interest. They communicate, share ideas- stories, trade information and ‘chat’ in real time.
Online marketing
Marketing that blends bricks and mortar marketing strategies with those of the online medium. It also creates new marketing strategies and systems that are particular to the uniqueness of the internet.
Online newsletter
A form of communication that focuses on a certain topic and, or, industry. It is sent out via email to the email boxes of subscribers on a regular basis. It is also a form of advertising, promoting and marketing.
P
Page rank
A score given to individual pages that make up each website. Page rank denotes popularity such as the number of other websites that have external links to it and how often its key words are searched for.
Paid listings
Online advertised listings companies pay for. They appear in the prime spots on the search engines. Or they may be Google AdWords / AdSense, Yahoo/Overture pay per click (PPC) that appear in the body of text content.
Password
A secret set of letters or numbers or both that allows a user to log into an authorized area, computer system or program.
Q
Query
A ‘find’ command when searching for a certain web site, files and so on
R
Random-Access Memory / RAM
It is the hardware in your computer that stores the information a user is inputting. Example it is the information that is stored while writing a letter and before you press ‘save’. RAM is also one of the things that make your computer run faster. The more RAM the faster it goes.
Reciprocal link
An advertising, promotional, marketing, and search engine ranking strategy - where web masters place links to each others´ site. A form of link-exchange.

Scanner
A device that is hooked up your computer and which allows you to make replica copies from hard copies to computer files or web pages.
Scroll (and) scroll bar
The scrolling bar is always to the right of the screen or a horizontal bar at the bottom of the page. It allows you to move the page up and down or from left to right and vice versa, on the screen so you can access content that may be below the fold.
Seamless
The joining or integrating of a new software with an old one and doing so without any problems at all.
Search
It is the act of looking for some sort of information on the internet via search engine, or news group, or archive and so on.
Search engine
It is an electronically and technologically powered tool that is also a website and which comprises of over 90 billion pages with information on every topic imaginable. By entering an interest or key word it organizes and returns all those pages that have the interest or key word.
SEO
Search Engine Optimization
A structured and methodological system of strategies aimed at getting websites and web pages to rank highest on search engines.
T
Tag
Web programming languages that are written in code, it commands and describes how content should be organized on a webpage. Amongst web browsers it is a universal language which they interpret.
Targeted marketing
A strategy of collecting and organizing information to determine demographics of groups to get a better understanding of how best to market to them.
Task bar
The task or tool bar is usually the horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen on Windows. From the left to the right of the bar are several icons. These tell you which programs are being used, if you are connected to wireless, shows the start button and so on.
Text link
A text link is a non graphic/ non- picture link. It is usually a word or phrase that is underlined and or written in blue ink. When clicked the blue becomes a purple reddish color.
Thread
Threads are common to online communities such as forums, discussion groups, blogs and so on. It is a string or set of postings regarding a single topic or subject.

V
Vanity page
Like a vanity license plate, a vanity page or site is not for commercial purposes but rather it is a personal home page that tells the visitors about the owner.
VC money
Venture Capital money
Venture capital is the money that investors are willing to invest into a new and potentially profitable e-commerce idea.
VeriSign
The largest domain name register and internet trust service provider in the world. These trust services include but are not limited to extranets and e-commerce solutions.
Video
Similar to net radio but rather than only audio capability there is both audio and visual capabilities. A low-costing (often) home made movie or television production.
Viral
A marketing strategy that spreads quickly, via masses of people, like a ‘virus’ spreads in the wind.
Viral marketing
A simple and highly effective marketing strategy generates a lot of often free publicity that quickly spreads from person to person or website to website.
Virtual product placements
A marketing strategy that is subtle. For example a well know icon appearing in a background or foreground shot or story that has nothing to do with the product-an almost ‘natural’ inclusion.
Virus
An annoying and sometimes destructive program that remakes copies of its self and which usually spread through emails.
W
Wide Area Network / WAN
A network of computers spread out over vast geographic distances and which are connected via high speed, satellites or cables.
Web content syndication
A web service that research, collates, summarizes and organizes information into a comprehensive package for a fee.
Web designer
Someone who designs the navigation capabilities, and, the look and feel of a web site.
Web developer
Someone who builds a website but unlike the designer, creates the technical foundation of the website, such as programming; also called a programmer.
Web hosting
A service provider who hosts or provide a ‘platform’from which to launch a site or sites at fast speed to the internet.
Webcast
A live audio and video presentation that is very much like a television show that is broadcasted via the internet.

Yahoo!
Yahoo! Inc
One of the big three in search engines. It is not ‘spidered’ by technology but by humans.
Yahooligans!
A search engines dedicated to children.
